The great room of this waterfront contemporary two-story home is
on the top level of the home to take advantage of the water
views from every window. The great room includes both living and
dining areas as well as the kitchen. The entire circular space
is capped by a cathedral ceiling that sports a ceiling fan with
lights in the center of the room.
The west side of the living room is
framed by nine clad Pella
double-paned, screened, weather stripped windows (each 3 ½ ft x 5 ½ ft.).
They have mini-blinds. Three other windows of the same size and
type adorn the opposite side of the room. All windows have a
water view of either the Chincoteague Bay
or navigable canals that empty into the Bay.
A dramatic
accent wall (currently painted black but could be any color to
compliment the décor) faces southeast and houses a closet plus
the entrance to the upstairs full bathroom. A spiral staircase
with railing is in the center of the room. Above the stair well
is a ceiling fan with lights. The floor covering is neutral
wall-to-wall carpet. There is a
Temco/FireTech
2000 vent-free fireplace/stove providing an alternate
heat source as well as an ideal place to curl up on a rainy day
with a book. All this adds to the drama of the room and opens
the possibilities for creative use of the space.
The content of the home's surrounding walls from outside to
inside consists of cedar siding, T-111,
Tyvek
protective barrier, 5/8 inch
plywood, R-22 insulation, another layer of 5/8 inch plywood,
masonite-like material, and acoustic wall covering. This means
picture hanging is a snap because nail holes are invisible and
there are no studs to search for or wall board to pierce! The
acoustic wall covering is similar to that used in concert halls
such as the Kennedy Center.
This wall treatment affords a wonderful acoustical environment
for music, TV, home theatre, and other sound sources but also
creates a warm and friendly environment. Acoustic wall covering
not only improves listening, it provides additional insulation
and is easy to clean with a vacuum cleaner.
Two doors (each 38½ x 83
inches) and a stairwell access the area. The north-facing door
enters the room from the outside stairs and decking. The south
facing door opens to a totally screened porch with access to the
decking that surrounds one-half of the home.
The open design lends itself to locating dining, sitting, and
recreational activities most any place in this room. In this
house there are no longer designated locations for those
activities; consequently, arrangement of furniture and
decorations can be changed as often as desired with ease.
